The Australian National Advertisers Association (AANA) has reported a decline in the number of grievances concerning gambling advertisements in the year 2020.
A current report from the ACMA indicates that the government’s regulations implemented on broadcasting platforms to safeguard children from gambling advertisements during live sporting events between 5am and 8:30pm have been successful.
The report states: “ACMA’s monitoring activities show that broadcasters are adhering to the rules, with a considerable reduction in the number of gambling ads from the beginning of pre-game programming to the end of post-game programming.”
Based on AANA data, only 0.45% of advertising complaints were connected to AANA’s betting conduct guidelines.
These guidelines specifically apply to advertising of betting products and services provided by Australian licensed operators. They apply to all RWA members, covering wagers on events such as horse racing, greyhound racing, and athletic events.
The reduction in complaints is attributed to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) imposing limitations on gambling advertisements during live sporting events.
Earlier this week, the media regulator discovered that television company Foxtel had violated broadcasting regulations by displaying a gambling advertisement during an Australian Rules Football League match.
