Spains gaming business saw a substantial rise in the initial three months of 2023, with total income (GGR) skyrocketing by 51% annually to €304.9 million. This surge was fueled by increased earnings across various sectors.
The GGR data, released every three months by Spains gambling regulator, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), indicates that while it dipped by 2.7% compared to the preceding three-month period, the overall gambling revenue for the quarter reached a new peak.
The casino sector contributed most to the income, reaching €143.3 million, a 29.1% annual jump. Spains betting sector generated a total income of €130.6 million, a significant increase of 100.1% compared to the first three months of 2022. Bingo revenue stood at €3.3 million, down 6.6% annually.
Poker’s total GGR was €27.3 million, up 24.9% annually. However, the most notable growth came from the competition revenue sector, which reached €25 million, a 730.4% annual increase, compared to only €3 million in the initial three months of 2022.
Total marketing spending in the first three months amounted to €93.3 million, down 0.8% annually. This included €50.1 million in promotional expenses, €30 million in advertising expenses, €11.8 million in affiliate fees, and €1.2 million in sponsorship fees.
Sponsorship fees saw the fastest growth, increasing by 93.1% annually. Meanwhile, advertising expenses saw the largest decline, falling by 12.7%.
The total number of monthly active player accounts this quarter was 1,158,628, an increase of 11.0% annually.
